“The shadows are part of the picture. They aren’t the whole picture.”
To me, shadow work means learning to sit with the uncomfortable parts of yourself, a memory, a thought, a feeling, without rushing to fix it, change it, or make it disappear.
In this painting, I took that idea literally. I painted the shadows cast by my own houseplants and turned them into the leafy green pattern that surrounds her. At the centre, a woman stands in Tree Pose.
Honestly, those shadows might be my favourite part. But they aren’t the main subject. She is.
That became a useful reminder for me. Hard memories, old experiences and complicated feelings can still be there. They don’t have to disappear. But they also don’t get to take over.
The shadows are there. The growth is there. And she’s still standing in the centre of it all.
The original painting now lives with a collector, so this fine art print is the way to bring Shadow Work home.
Made for the spaces where you reflect
A bedroom, a yoga space, a therapy office, or anywhere you go to slow down. Shadow Work makes a meaningful gift for a yoga lover, a plant lover, or anyone doing the quiet, brave work of getting to know themselves.
A note on the composition
The original Shadow Work is a 60” x 30” inch painting in acrylic, tea and wood stain on panel. I design my prints to fit popular frame sizes, so you can find an affordable, ready-made frame almost anywhere instead of paying for custom framing. To make that work, the composition of this print has been adjusted from the original.
